Women who work are equally as likely as men to suffer heart attacks, heart attacks and arterial blockage for performing stressful jobs, compared to women working in less demanding activities, reports Associated Press (AP).
This is the first longitudinal study that looks at the current position of women, since in the past there have been studies that associate stress and demanding jobs with men's health.
The results found that women who worry about losing their job can double the probability of having a heart attack.
More than 17 thousand women participated in the longitudinal study that took an average of healthy working women of 57 years of age who had worked full or part time since 1999.
Separated into 4 groups based on the level of stress they reported, the researchers analyzed them for 10 years to find out how they had progressed. Women with demanding jobs and little control over how they did it were twice as likely to suffer a heart attack as women with less stressful jobs and more control.
Women worried about losing their job had high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and increased body weight. Stress can cause damage to the body by releasing hormones that cause inflammation and increase blood pressure, says Dr. Steinbaum for the AP.
